Relationship Challenges

Relationships with people can be the source of much joy, but also the source of much frustration, disappointment, and stress. Many factors, some inside and some outside of our control, affect how relationships evolve and change. Modern living and adult responsibilities can also make it challenging to meet new people and make meaningful connections. Together, we can explore how your relationships affect you, identify patterns and needs, and find ways to build healthier, more fulfilling connections.

The major cause of divorce (80%) is that people become emotionally distant and drift apart.

The “Honeymoon” period of relationship is romanticized and well documented in movies and books. People can’t seem to get enough of each other. Successful long-term relationships need to continually cultivate connection and shared interests. Other factors that contribute to successful relationship include effective communication and decision-making, shared values, and balance .

Relationship Green Flags

We have all heard about relationship red flags, but cultivating green flags is something worth working towards.

Relationship Green Flags include:

  • Appreciation - Valuing your partner and expressing gratitude

  • Commitment - You give the relationship adequate time and energy

  • Conflict resolution - You take accountability for your actions, and and work together to resolve problems

  • Empathy - You are able to take your partner’s perspective and understand each others feeling, even when you don’t always agree

  • Indpendence - You have your own interests and goals separate from those of your partner

  • Safety - You respect your partner’s boundaries. You feel safe physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

  • Balance - You have your own and shared interests.

  • Commonality - You share important values, goals, and beliefs.

  • Effective communication - You communicate your needs and wishes while respecting those of your partner.

  • Honesty - Your actions and words align. You express genuine thoughts and feelings

  • intimacy - You feel close and connected with your partner physically and emotionally

  • Self-confidence - You feel comfortable being yoursel in the relationship

All of the above can be improved with attention and intention.

What working with John is like:

  • Driven by you - We will go where you want to go. My primary focus is to help you move towards your goals.

  • Practical - Not all things work for all people. We will explore different approaches and zero in on what works best for you.

  • Safe and supportive - Therapy works best when it is a place of calm in the storm and a safe place to explore and grow.

  • Values based - As the song goes, “You can’t get what you want, until you know what you want.” People generally feel better when they spend time on activities aligned with their values.

  • Insightful (hopefully!) - It can be very useful to connect current challenges to our past experiences to better understand where we are coming from.
